About Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind
The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind pilot project, located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, is an important first step toward offshore wind development in Virginia and the United States. It is only the second offshore wind project in the nation, the first installed in federal waters, and the first owned by an electric utility company. The CVOW pilot project moves Virginia to more sustainable energy and provides Dominion Energy with valuable experience in the permitting, design, installation, and operations which will be applied to the CVOW commercial project — a proposed 2,640 megawatt offshore wind facility located within a 112,800-acre lease area adjacent to the pilot project. Offshore wind generation is a vital part of Dominion Energy’s comprehensive sustainable energy strategy to meet requirements in the Virginia Clean Economy Act by 2045 and to achieve the company’s net zero carbon dioxide and methane emissions across its 16 states by 2050.
